Bloom: A Celebration of Christian Growth and Wellness for Women
In Spring of 2005, the Assistant Principal of Jefferson County High School, Louie Vesser, created and hosted the first annual FCA celebration of women in the Lakeway Area, which he called, "Bloom". He and the JCHS FCA leadership team planned an outstanding spring festival with Sylvia Hatchell, head coach of the University of North Carolina's women's basketball program, as the guest speaker. There were numerous door prizes and a catered brunch at Carson Newman College. The event was a wonderful success. Mr. Vesser, who had been instrumental in bringing back the FCA program to JCHS had found yet another way that FCA could impact our community.
Louie passed away suddenly the summer following that first "Bloom" event. In his memory, parents of the FCA leadership team planned the second annual "Bloom" on April 26, 2006, with Joan Cronan, UT's Women's Athletic Director as guest speaker, a fashion show by Judy Gardner of the "Silk Purse" and numerous donated door prizes. Mr. Vesser's widow and mother were our honored guests. We filled the Carson Newman dining hall to capacity.
Each year we have grown and have continued to be blessed with phenomenal speakers such as Ann Furrow, Lady Vols Assistant Golf Coach, Robin Wilhoit of Channel 10 and Kay O'Brien, First Lady of Carson Newman College.
This annual event is used to create awareness of the ministry outreach and to raise funds to support programs and activities associated with the local FCA chapter in the Lakeway Area. This includes Leadership and Sports Camps for coaches and students as well as basic funding for the ministry.
